October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). It’s a time to honor victims and raise awareness about the devastating impact of domestic violence. Violence, abuse, and trauma touch everyone’s lives, leaving a devastating impact on people from every background, identity, and circumstance.
In October 2020, Through These Doors (TTD) will undertake several activities and events to raise visibility across platforms to a diverse audience. Most will be virtual in keeping with public health objectives at this time.
Our goals are to prioritize and include survivor voices, reach those who may not know about us or our services, and collaborate with community partners. We prioritize diversity, inclusion, and intersectionality.
Activities include:
• Purple Lights Nights®
• White Ribbon Campaign
• City of Portland City Hall Shines Purple
• Cultural Humility Training with the New England Arab-American Organization
• Social media posts
• I Stand With TTD campaign of personal statements of support
• Library and Bookstore Campaign
• Faith-Based Outreach
It takes a community to create a space of safety, health, and hope for all members. TTD cannot do this work alone. An effective method of ending domestic violence in our neighborhoods is to be no longer silent and inactive.
